Laura Chinchilla Elected First Woman President of Costa Rica

The ruling party candidate Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla announced his victory in the country's presidential election. This will make the Chinchilla as first female president in Costa Rica.

Chinchilla won 47 percent of the vote after a quarter completed ballot counted in the presidential election in Costa Rica. Strongest rival, Ottón Solis of Citizens Action Party party to collect only 23 percent of the vote. Solis and other major rivals have admitted defeat them.

"He will be the next president of Costa Rica," Solis said to his supporters as reported by Reuters on Monday (8/2/2010).

Chinchilla is a protege President of Costa Rica today, Óscar Arias of the Nobel Peace Prize winner. Chinchilla in his campaign promise to continue free-market economic policies applied by the current government.

Chinchilla who became vice president Arias, 40 percent of the vote needed to avoid a second round of elections scheduled for next April.

Chinchilla is a socially conservative mother and 50-year-old who oppose abortion and same-sex marriage.

With this victory he became the first female president in Costa Rica and the fifth in Latin America. After previously Nicaragua, Panama, Chile, and Argentina has never had a woman president.
