Russia - U.S. Nuclear Treaty Continue Discussion

JENEWA, - Russia and U.S. start talks marathon again to update the nuclear disarmament agreement that has ended is important in December.

"As already announced by the Russian foreign minister, Friday, discussion has begun again in Geneva today," said a Russian diplomat told AFP, without specifically mentioning how long the new round of talks will be held.

Russia and the U.S. delegation has met regularly since last May to sign a treaty to replace the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) in 1991 which had expired on December 5.

Discussion about a new deal largely stuck to the presidency of George W. Bush.

However, the arrival of Barack Obama in the White House and the recent steps to cancel planned missile shield in eastern Europe has given new impetus to the talks to move forward.

On January 27, the U.S. declared that the talks were "almost finished".

The new agreement scheme has been clear since the July summit, when Obama and his colleagues from Russia, Dmitri Medvedev agreed that the successor agreement will reduce the number of warheads on each side was to be between 1500 and 1675 warheads.

The two presidents also agreed that the number of carriers that could send the warhead would be limited to between 500 and 1100 carriers.

U.S. states that the country now has about 2200 nuclear warheads, while Russia is believed to have more or less the 3000 nuclear warheads.
